Book title: Lights Of Aurora, book 2 of The Stone Legacy Series
Book Blurb:

After the discovery of her ancient Maya bloodlines, eighteen-year-old Ashley Coreandero is faced with a daunting responsibility. She must protect the stone of Muuk’Ich while Sarian, the underworld general, relentlessly drives her to the brink of insanity.

As the winter solstice approaches, it brings an onslaught of unexpected side effects. Ashley must seize control over her supercharged powers, while dealing with the overwhelming suspicion that her boyfriend, Arwan, is hiding a secret so dark it could destroy them both.

With the arrival of a surprise houseguest, Ashley’s deepest fears about Arwan are confirmed. And when middleworld deities intercede, the group of gifted Maya descendants are confronted with hardships they never saw coming—including an enemy more deadly than they have ever faced.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned—but when that woman has no soul and a taste for revenge, they will need the powers of every surviving ancestor simply to stay alive.

Excerpt:

Ashley clutched her chest. She didn’t know what to do, but she couldn’t run. Not if there was even a possibility of leaving Arwan behind. Who was she kidding? There was no way out even if she did run. She’d probably just die in the—

Ashley froze. Her gaze slowly dropped to her hands, outstretched in front of her with her fingers spread. They looked normal enough. Like her hands. Her normal, everyday hands. Tendons and veins buried under skin. Long, thin fingers. A scar on her left thumb from where she cut herself in the kitchen when she was a kid. Was that how the hands of a dead person looked? Just like normal hands?

The tempo of the drum grew faster, and Ashley’s attention was pulled back to the scene in front of her. She searched the temple’s peak, but whomever, or whatever was there, was gone.

The people turned back toward the temple. Ashley watched them part like the Red Sea as the creature glided toward her over the stone path. Blood still coated one of his arms and dripped from what was left of his fingertips, leaving a trail upon the ground.

The chants were too low to understand at first. Ashley strained her ears to figure out what they were saying. The entire city mumbled in unison to the beat of the drum until the mumbles grew louder, and the word they repeated was clear enough to make out.

Houn. Houn. Houn.

They repeated his name in a low, ominous tone as if trying to instigate him. It was the deity they had come to see.

The bearer of souls.

With his bloodstained hand, Houn reached out to Ashley. A thick drop of scarlet plumped on the curve of his knuckle and swelled until it fell to the dusty earth. Ashley swallowed.

Standing eye to eye with a god was a lot like standing eye to eye with a priest. Physically he wasn’t much larger than her, but what he represented made him seem ten feet tall. She could feel his power radiating on to her. The weight of his energy nearly pushed her back.

Houn slowly dropped his hand. He hadn’t spoken a word. She figured he couldn’t, though she knew by now that nothing was impossible.

He turned and stared at the top of the temple. Ashley followed his gaze, and couldn’t help but glance at the leather sack strapped to his back. There was where he carried the souls.

A man appeared at the top of the altar. He was so far away, but she could make out the shine of his tailored suit and the gloss of his black hair.

Her light burst to life. It was a relief to know at least some of her abilities still worked—until the sick heat rushed through her body, and dark hues of violet shined from her chest. It projected all around her, and she clung to the boulder, scorching her skin.

Her limbs went numb and she sank to the ground. Her head bowed, and on her knees, she held in view a pair of shined dress shoes standing in front of her beside the brass foot of a wooden cane.

Her gaze left the cane, swept up to the creased slacks, and stopped on a two-button jacket. His skin completely intact, Ashley’s mouth fell open as Sarian leered down at her with a heinous grin.

He held out his hand. The soul bearer stood to the side, as if giving allowance to the general of the realm.

Sarian snatched her hand and held it in his with an iron grip. She struggled to pull away, but he pinched her fingers painfully together while his thumb made small circles over her skin.

She wanted to scream but knew it would be useless, so she rose to her feet as his eyes morphed with shades of purple and black.

Sarian was enjoying this. That much was obvious by the way he held his head high, chest pushed out and chin tipped up, arrogance beaming from his face. “You are in my kingdom now, young guardian. There is no safe haven for you here.”

It wouldn’t be long until she found out what exactly he meant. When she did, she was afraid Renato’s worries would be all too justified.

While he led her down the stone path, his fingers snaked over hers. He flashed a serpentine smile, and paused at the temple’s base. The sick heat in her chest wrapped around her lungs. “I had no doubt you would eventually make the right decision, my queen.”

Bio:

A long time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa began her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and feature articles to delve into the whimsical world of fiction.

Since then, Theresa has been married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and has been repeatedly guilt tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having traveled to over a dozen countries—not to mention an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. But wherever life brings her, Theresa will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

Coming Soon: 13th Street, Novella 2.5 of The Stone Legacy Series.

Author Heather Van Fleet Shares Seizing Fate

SF FINAL

Seizing Fate (Predetermined #2)

Young adult Paranormal romance

Seizing Fate blurb:

And you thought Emmy’s life was a hot mess before…

Jack’s gone off to Arizona with his brother, but for how long? Emmy doesn’t have a clue. In his place, though, is Zachary. The whiny, miserable, alpha wolf–boy who is more than ready to take on the duty of her mate/boyfriend — if she’d let him, that is. But the last thing Emmy wants is to deal with a boy who believes that the world should fall solely at his feet whenever he demands it.

But hey, at least her step–douche is gone, and her life is back to an almost normal sense, right?

Wrong again, Emmy’s life will never again be normal…

With her Uncle Prick in town and her best friend acting as secretive as ever, Emmy finds new challenges to overcome — challenges that no seventeen–year–old girl should ever have to deal with. For one thing, what is up with her dream–liaison status anyway? What does it mean, really? And why does her little brother have to go through it too? And then there’s her mom. The lady is acting a tad bit odd, to put it nicely. After all these years, she finally wants to step up and be a parental figure? Heck no! Emmy’s definitely not copacetic with that idea.

But with the bad, there’s got to be some good out there for her somewhere, right?

Add in the wolves, witches, drama, and lots of kisses and you get Emmy the Extraordinaire, the girl with strawberry–colored hair, and a chip on her shoulder. She’s finally on her way to finding out what her life and her future both have in store for her, even if the road to getting there is nowhere near as easy as she hoped it would be. But Emmy is tough, and more than ready to take on life with her bare hands.

It’s just too bad she’s madly, desperately, insanely in love with a boy who insists on making her life both a miserable hell and utter perfection at the same time.

Excerpt:

Pressure, fire, wetness, tongues — single words were all I could think as our mouths battled. God, I’d never been kissed like this before. Ever, and if we stopped, I’d die a happy woman from his lips touching mine alone. He tugged his hand into the back of my hair, pulling my chin upwards, yanking me towards him. I clawed at his shirt, ready to rip it from his massive body. I pulled at his jacket first, lowering it over his shoulders until it fell to the floor. The buttons jingled against the tile, scattering over our feet. Damn, if he didn’t care about his signature black coat falling apart, then I had to wonder what else I could get away with.

Witch Way To Turn by Karen Y. Bynum AND Coffee Chat

Author Ally Shields is hosting me at Coffee Chat today. We’re sharing a lovely pot of French Vanilla–YUM!!–and I’m sharing info about Shifting Pride,my writing goals, and highlights of 2012. 😉

* * * * * * * * * *

For me, Twitter is where it’s at to find fun, Indie, authors, with adventurous books. And that’s how I stumbled upon Karen Y. Bynum. The cover of her novel, Witch Way To Turn, is stunning. The expression on the girl’s face is, wow, it just draws me in.

Now, I love action. Like, LOVE it. Nothing gets my heart pumping and my gaze skittering across the pages like a good action story. And Karen delivers.

Add to that two totally HOT guys with dark, wild sides that would make any girl swoon, and we’ve got a winning combination. Honestly, I couldn’t decide who I wanted to root for more…actually, it would be totally cool for both guys to “win,” LOL! 😉

The main character is a witch who’s growing into her powers and finding out about her heritage. There’s bad peeps who are after her and her main concern is keeping her younger sister safe. The tension and danger in that conflict really made this story special.

I’d recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal, romance, action, supernatural beings, kick-ass heroines, and hot guys.

I’d give this story 5 out of 5 stars. Great job, Karen! Now, where’s the sequel?!?!?! ;p

Writer Wednesday–Crutch Words

I’m in the midst of the second round of edits for my debut novel, SHIFTING PRIDE. I’m loving how the story and writing is shaping up with each pass. This round, not only am I focusing on smoothing more details, I’m also working on nixing “crutch words” (words I use repeatedly in my writing).

(Thanks, Stephanie McGee, for giving me a term to use!) 😉

In this MS, big crutch words for me include PULLED and PRESSED. Who knew?

Anyway, how does one tackle the crutch word?

I’ve been using the “find” function to identify where in the MS each occurrence of PRESSED is located. Then I work on reworking the sentence to eliminate it or substitute it with another word.

Gotta say, my thesaurus is coming in handy too, LOL!

How about youse guys? How to you search and destroy crutch words? Do you try to nix them while you’re drafting or do you catch them during edits?

Writer Wednesday–Sirens Call Publications

I’m so happy that my short story, BEGGING  DEATH, was accepted in the Carnage: After the End anthology by Sirens Call Publications!

Here’s a mini-blurb of what the anthology entails:

It’s the beginning of the end. The Apocalypse has come; and left in its wake no more than small pockets of survivors battling to stay alive.

Eep!

I’m so excited to work with the Sirens Call team–what a talented group of peeps! Click HERE for more info about the WHO behind Sirens Call Publications.

Here’s a blurb of my story:

Peter Mack experiences The Disappearing first hand–in an instant, most of the world’s population disappears and with it, Death abandons humankind. Illness and suffering remain, leaving Peter to protect and provide for the only person he knows that’s still alive, Lucas. It starts with Peter accepting The Mark of Triple Six, the militia promising safety and rations in exchange for allegiance.

Despite the illusion of security, survival is not guaranteed. A rival faction, Serpentine, invades Triple Six and kidnaps Peter and Lucas. They are separated. Unable to shelter Lucas, Peter confronts his promise to protect Lucas no matter what. Turns out, Peter must consider sacrificing everything, even eternity, for Lucas’ freedom.

Right now, I’m reading another short story anthology of theirs titled Twisted Realities: Of Myth and Monstrosity. It’s FAB!!!!! Scary, spine-tingling, and creepy, each author’s story creates a taunting tale of horror and myth turned reality. Check it out!

Mental Health Monday–A Better Pain Chart

When patients are admitted to the hospital, their vital signs are checked at regular intervals. Vital signs include blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and percent oxygenation of the blood. A fifth vital sign includes rating pain on a scale of 0-10. Since pain is such a subjective thing, the scale includes pictures to help the rater identify where they lie on the scale.

Pain Measurement Scale (CLICK THE LINK TO SEE PIC)

A better pain chart has been made and it’s circling around the interwebz like crazy. So I thought I’d share it with all y’all.

A Better Pain Chart (CLICK LINK TO SEE PIC)

I deleted the pic to avoid copyright infringement, so I’ll paraphrase the scale…

0: No pain

1: Not sure if I’m in pain

2: Just need a band-aid

3: Distressed; don’t like what’s happening

4: Pain is not effing around

5: Why is this happening to me???

6: Ow. Pain is super legit right now

7: I see Jesus coming for me and I’m scared

8: Pain is disturbing. I may be dying

9: I am almost definitely dying

10: I am actually being mauled by a bear

11: Blood will explode out my face any moment

Too Serious for Numbers: You probably have ebola. It appears you may also be suffering from stigmata and/or pinkeye

Quite useful, isn’t it?

I’m SO Excited SQUEE!!!!

Hey gang,

Guess what?

My Young Adult Paranormal Romance, SHIFTING PRIDE, is going to be PUBLISHED!!!!!!!

That’s right, the wonderful folks at Etopia Press are making this happen.

I just signed the contract a few days ago. Right now, I’m working on blurbs, taglines, and gearing up for edits.

***SQUEE!!!!!***

Here’s my initial pitch for SHIFTING PRIDE (to give you an idea of what it’s about):

Sixteen-year-old Nickie Leone has proof that her missing (presumed dead) father is still alive. Receiving his watch in the mail is the first in a line of clues bringing her closer to discovering his whereabouts. But clues aren’t the only new thing in Nickie’s life. There’s the Memorial Banquet her mother insists she help prepare for, there’s the new kid/hottie, Xavian, and…well, the growth of whiskers and a tail!

Filled with secrets and a new love of tuna fish, Nickie must partner up with Xavian (don’t you know he’s a shapeshifter too?) to rescue her dad before she loses him forever. Oh, and she needs to figure out how to be a cat, too.

To spread the joy, I’d like to host a giveaway.

All you have to do is leave a comment–AND I’ll count your name TWICE if you help spread the word (by Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, etc) (just let me know if you’ve done it).

How about I announce WINNERS in TWO WEEKS to give peeps time to stop by. 🙂

WINNERS will be chosen at random. THREE lucky commenters will receive a book of their choice AND a three chapter crit from ME!
