Description:

Curiosity brings out the Kitty…

Sixteen-year-old Nickie Leone has proof her father is still alive. His watch arrives in the mail, with a note telling her to “keep it hidden,” and her curiosity is piqued. She obeys the request, even keeping it hidden from her mother. But when an email from her father disappears before her very eyes, she begins to question her own sanity.

And things get even more complicated when she meets Xavian Katz, the blue-eyed, blonde hottie whose contagious smile and ridiculous sense of humor make her want to tell him all her secrets. But there’s a current beneath his charm that she can’t quite read. He’s hiding something.

When Nickie grows pointed ears and whiskers…and then a tail!…Xavian (who always seems to knows the right time to be around) seems unsurprised. He’s a shapeshifter too, a coincidence that Nickie can’t deny or ignore. She needs his help to master her new abilities, because her father’s rival, Derek, wants her to join his tribe. The last thing she wants is to be under his rule, but Derek’s got something to do with her dad’s disappearance—she knows it. And maybe letting herself be captured is the best way to find out…

Is Blogging Still A Thing? Maybe Not For Me…

I’m sure you’ve heard the statement, “Blogging is dead.” It seems to circulate the interwebz every few months. I gotta say, I never thought it to be the case. Until now.

My change in perspective has to do with my own approach to blogging. Most of you have no doubt noticed the change in my blog. Since summer, I’ve cut waaaaay back on posting. Part of it had to do with juggling three novels at once (never want to do that again–talk about skirting the edge of burn out!!!!) and some struggles I was having at the day job. Initially, I thought I’d be back in business by fall. Well, that didn’t happen. Deadlines got pushed out for various reasons, the day job stuff didn’t lessen, and my creativity took a nose dive. I pulled back to completing the essentials while letting the extras slide.

I hate the idea that my blog became an “extra.” I know I’ve lost readers. I know it’s because I’m not actively reading and commenting on others’ blogs. I also know I can’t keep it all up anymore. The momentum I’d gained with my first releases, New Pride and Shifting Pride, has ground to a halt.

And I don’t know where to go from here…

Sure, I’m still actively writing and will have 3 new publications in the coming year (Endure’s sequel, Evoke, with Etopia Press, The Zodiac Collector with Spencer Hill Press, and a sekrit project). WOOT!

I love my stories. I’m proud of my publications. And I’m hopeful for the future.

Getting back to blogging…

One thing is for certain. I’m going to have to reinvent part of myself. And when I say myself, I mean my online presence, my platform. I’ll have to try new ways of connecting with readers.

I’m not sure what that’s going to look like, but I’m considering it part of the process, part of the journey, if you will.

How about you? How do you keep your blogs going? Have you reinvented yourself? How’d you do it? What’s your favorite strategies for reaching readers?

My Etopia Press pub sista, Sara Hubbard, has a new release coming soon and today I get to share the cover–it’s sooooo pretty! Congrats, Sara!

Getting kidnapped would set her free…

Isame doesn’t want to marry the man her parents chose for her. She wants more: the freedom to travel, the freedom to explore, but most of all, the freedom to choose the life she wants instead of the one her parents expect. When Isame leaves her home to accept a man’s proposal, she encounters five fierce, handsome warriors. She wonders why they’ve travelled so far from home. She never imagines their purpose might have something to do with her, not even after they’ve kidnapped her.

Remmie is a fiercely loyal man who is true to his word. When his king commands him to find a young woman on the island of Copaxa, he doesn’t expect the puny woman to hold his attention or to make him consider turning his back on his brothers in arms and his king. But Isame is special and he can see it from the start. Soon he must decide if she is worth losing all he knows and loves for the girl that’s worked her way under his skin and into his heart.

The Vanished Knight by M. Gerrick

TheVanishedNight-banner

Welcome, Misha! Congrats on your new release. Sounds like a FAB story and I can’t wait to read it.

Let’s jump right in to the interview, shall we? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

It was never a thing of wanting to be a writer for me. I just wanted to write a story, after creating stories since before I could read. And then when I realized I was good at it, I wanted to publish the stories. So being a writer has pretty much was part of who I was from the beginning.

Sounds like you’re a natural. Tell us about how you developed your goal of making $7500 a month in royalties.

You’re going to laugh, but the $7500 goal is actually completely random. It was going to be $700 to rival my day-job salary, but then I thought it was uneven. So I wanted to change it to $1000, but it looked too easy. So I kept going up and up until the goal scared the crap out of me, and that’s where I stopped.

I gave myself five years in which to do it, because I didn’t want the goal to be a long-term thing that I’d get to one day.

Best of luck with that! I’ve got my fingers crossed for you. Switching gears a little bit: What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I always rough draft in pen. And the pen must always be v-tipped with black ink. Nowadays I have a fountain pen that I used only for my writing activities.

Writing by hand is a great technique. I’m a lefty and tend to get ink all over my hand, lol! Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?

Not really. I pretty much put on one of my playlists that I create for each WiP I write, open a note-book or document and get going.

Playlists are super important! Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?

Wish I could tell you. Usually I either have a character appear in my head, or I dream (literally) a concept/character/scene. This basically tells me it’s my subconscious putting stuff together, but only rarely can I tell you exactly where the stuff comes from.

A few things I do recognize: Chronicles of Narnia, Assassin’s Creed, a Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole poster and Doc Holiday from the movie Tombstone.

But those are for The Vanished Knight and three WiPs. I have about seventeen more ideas where I literally have no clue.

Loved Chronicles of Narnia. Any other books that have most influenced your life?

Definitely the Bible. Other books have had an influence on my life, but I can’t really say how.

Awesome!

Ok, another subject change: What do you think makes a good story?

Ooh… tricky… Great characterization, high stakes and a satisfying ending.

How did you come up for the idea for your book?

I was reading Chronicles of Narnia a second time ahead of (I think) Prince Caspian coming out in the movies. One of my main characters marched into my head and demanded I write the story. Gradually, the idea unfolded and I realized that it’d turn into a series. But that’s how The Vanished Knight was born.

Characters can be pretty persistent! What tip would you give writers who want to get published?

If you know your story is good, don’t give up on finding a home for it. All the rejections you get only means that the person you queried wasn’t right for your book.

Fun random questions:

What’s your favorite holiday?

Christmas. It’s when my family comes together for about a week.

What’s your favorite food?

It changes from time to time. At the moment it’s haloumi with a sweet chilli sauce to mellow the saltiness.

What’s your favorite animal?

Can’t really say I have one. Wolves, probably, but I also adore dogs and cats.

Coffee or tea?

Rooibos tea. Can’t stand the normal stuff.

Cake or pie?

Cake. Hands down.

I really like frosting, lol!

Well, I’ve had a blast chatting with you today, Misha. Thanks again for stopping by and best of luck with your book!

Blurb

Since the death of her parents, Callan Blair has been shunted from one foster family to another, her dangerous secret forcing the move each time. Her latest foster family quickly ships her off to an exclusive boarding school in the Cumbrian countryside. While her foster-brother James makes it his mission to get Callan expelled, a nearby ancient castle holds the secret doorway to another land…

When Callan is forced through the doorway, she finds herself in the magical continent of Tardith, where she’s shocked to learn her schoolmates Gawain and Darrion are respected soldiers in service to the king of Nordaine, one of Tardith’s realms. More than that, the two are potential heirs to the Black Knight—Nordaine’s crown prince.

But when the Black Knight fails to return from a mysterious trip, the realm teeters on the brink of war. Darrion and Gawain set out to find him, while Callan discovers there is more to her family history than she thought. The elves are claiming she is their princess.

Now with Darrion growing ever more antagonistic and her friendship with Gawain blossoming, Callan must decide whether to stay in Nordaine—where her secret grows ever more threatening—or go to the elves and uncover the truth about her family before war sets the realms afire.

Excerpt Truth and Deceit:

Prologue

She ran. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps, her heart pounding, her lungs burning as she clutched the infant to her chest and poured all of her energy into escape. An unnatural darkness flooded the night. There was no moon visible, no stars peeking through the dense fog. Thankfully, she knew these woods well, had grown up here, playing manhunt with the rest of the kids from the neighborhood. Only this was no game; this hunt was all too real, the consequences of being caught, severe.

Her eyes strained as she tried to watch for obstacles, fallen trees, puddles, patches of wet leaves. She had to keep her footing. A fall now could be deadly. Mud oozed between her toes as it filled the sneakers she had quickly shoved onto her bare feet.

Between the darkness and the fog, she could barely see where she was going. Yet, she didn’t dare slow down. Nor did she risk a glance back over her shoulder, afraid fear would paralyze her if she saw him coming.

She tried to listen for the telltale sounds of pursuit, but other than the sound of her own footfalls, the sucking of the mud each time she lifted a foot, and the pounding of her own heart, silence mocked her. Too much silence, the kind that warned of a predator on the hunt. But these woods had no large predators. Skunks, chipmunks, squirrels, even an occasional fox made their homes here. There were deer, beautiful, graceful, but not dangerous.

And then she heard it. A large branch snapping, the sound like a shotgun blast echoing in the silence. She knew that sound. When she and her friends were kids, they would hang around the woods, often bored, snapping the dead branches that littered the ground. She also knew that she was meant to hear it. He moved too stealthily for the noise to have been a mistake. It was part of the game, to ratchet up the fear, let her know just how close he was.

She looked around wildly, trying to get her bearings. Had she missed the trail that turned off and headed toward the canal? The shadows pressed too closely, she couldn’t tell. She had to find it before he reached her. Desperation had her risking one quick glance down at the baby. That was all it took to ground her—one peek at the helpless child depending on her.

She took a deep breath and looked around again. She had to find the trail and make it to the boathouse by the canal. Men often hung around down there late into the night, drinking beer, playing poker, enjoying the break from work and home. There would be help there, people to protect her and her baby.

When she recognized the fallen tree, where she had shared her first kiss with Jimmy Hessler, the first glimmer of hope since this chase had begun shivered through her. The path lay directly in front of her. She was almost there. A few more steps and she’d be on the trail where she could run full out. She could outrun him once she was out of the thick underbrush. She wouldn’t have the mud grabbing at her feet, the thorns tearing at her legs, or the undergrowth tripping her. She’d run track in high school, had run cross-country through these very trails, and she was fast. The fear prodded her to move even faster, adrenaline coursing through her bloodstream. Optimism soared as she covered the last few feet that would lead her to safety.

She felt a sting in her back, and she went down hard. She curled her body over the baby as best she could, trying to offer as much protection as possible. She landed hard on her right side, her hip slamming into a rock, sending pain shooting all the way up her side and down her leg. An explosion of light burst in front of her eyes as she struggled, fiercely, to hold on to consciousness. She fought against the eddy of blackness closing in on her from both sides, tunneling her vision.

As she dragged herself slowly forward, she spotted the old tree on the corner of the trail. She used her left foot to push herself forward, grabbing hold of anything she could reach to pull herself toward the tree. Thorns tore at her hands, her hair, her face; excruciating pain shot through her back. She clutched the baby to her breast. Sheer determination propelled her the last few inches to her goal. When she finally made it, she pushed the bushes aside and placed the swaddled infant into the hollow at the base of the tree, praying it wouldn’t start to cry until the man had gone. Praying it would cry loud enough to attract help once he had. She took one last look at her child. “I love you, my baby,” she whispered, and allowed the thick bushes to spring back into place, effectively camouflaging the tentative hiding place. Then, using the last of her energy, she pushed away from the tree and rolled over, coming to rest facedown with the lower half of her body still resting in the leaves and brush, and her upper body lying across the trail she had been so desperately trying to reach.

* * *

When he reached her, he didn’t even bother to bend down, just used his foot to roll her onto her back. A jolt of surprise shot through him when he realized the infant was not underneath her. It shattered his arrogance and drove him to his knees. He pawed frantically through the brush, searching for the child. He didn’t need a light, was used to the dark and could see as well as if the sun were illuminating the shadows and fog that covered the ground.

There was no baby.

Sweat sprung out on his forehead. Where was it? Had she left the child somewhere? A chill crawled down his spine. Had it even been with her when she’d fled the apartment?

The sudden realization that he had just gone from the hunter to the prey brought with it true, gut-wrenching fear.

Burning Both Ends by Ally Shields

I’m so excited to have Ally Shields here today to talk about her latest book in the Guardian Witch Series, Burning Both Ends. This is definitely a series to check out if you haven’t already.

Welcome, Ally!

Thanks so much, Laura, for inviting me to your blog for a little BSP (Blatant Self-Promotion)!

I love talking about my books, but I was a reader first. From the time I was first introduced to urban fantasies about fifteen years ago, I fell in love with it. But I find there are readers who don’t understand why some books are just labeled paranormal and others are urban fantasy. The lines are definitely becoming blurred, but the simple distinction is in the word: urban. A city setting, and in particular a contemporary city setting, where the real world and the supernatural world both exist. It makes for very interesting cultural conflicts while blending the everyday world we know with another world that only exists in the writer’s and reader’s imaginations. I hope you’ll take a moment to step inside the urban fantasy universe I’ve created.

Burning Both Ends (Guardian Witch #3) Blurb:

Friend or lover. Life or death…

Supernatural cop Ari Calin arrives at the hostile Toronto vampire court with an ultimatum from the Riverdale vampires: Sebastian, Toronto’s vampire prince, must stop his unprovoked attacks—or else. Ari wasn’t expecting a fight—the “or else” was typical vampire grandstanding. But even with vampire Andreas De Luca by her side for a show of strength, things get ugly fast. Toronto’s vampire world is in crisis, and surrounded by enemies, Ari and Andreas find themselves under attack.

Then Ari gets the call from the Magic Council ordering her home. Steffan, a good friend and leader of Riverdale’s werewolves, has gone missing during top secret negotiations with the US government, and is believed to have been kidnapped—or killed.

Andreas can’t abandon the Toronto vampires, and Ari can’t leave him to face impossible odds alone. Neither can she disobey her orders from the Council, or leave her friend Steffan to be tortured and killed. Ari’s loyalties pull her in two directions—the closest thing to love she’s ever known on one side, and friendship and duty on the other. If she can stay alive long enough for the choice to matter…

Excerpt:

Fangs flashed where her cheek had been an instant before. Ari whirled, crouching to meet the vampire’s return charge, and her fingers sparked, witch blood clamoring for action. Refusing its urgent call, she threw the magic powder as he wheeled and sped toward her in a blur. Green particles sparkled. A loud thump. The vampire recoiled from the invisible barrier and took two staggering steps. A direct hit. Before a smile more than touched her lips, the dark figure recovered and leaped. Ari backpedaled, but his weight drove her to the hard ground.

He grinned down at her, a lock of dark hair falling across his forehead. Trapping her arms above her head, he leaned close, his dark eyes glittering. He brushed her lips with his and whispered, “Better—but not yet good enough.” Andreas shifted his six-foot, muscled body, sprang up, and offered her a hand.

Ignoring the courtesy, Ari scrambled to her feet. Getting pinned by your boyfriend wasn’t always a good thing. “Back off, bloodsucker,” she grumbled. She shook out the fallen leaves and pine needles that clung to her long, honey-colored hair.

Andreas chuckled. A rich, warm sound. “Touchy tonight. Did I put your nose out of joint, little witch? And here I was, trying to help with your training.” Andreas glided across the forest clearing with the smooth grace of a natural predator. He collected their cell phones from under a park bench where they’d stashed them earlier in the evening and handed her one.

“Thanks.” Ari avoided his eyes. Damn right she was annoyed. She was competitive, and second place wasn’t good enough—even against a master level vampire. Especially one who wasn’t really trying to kill her.

Andreas studied her face, his voice pragmatic. “I am glad you are taking this seriously. Other combatants will be less charitable than I, less mindful of breaking your pretty neck. I can almost guarantee Sebastian will continue his fight with Prince Daron, and next time he may lead the attack. You might have to face him again.”

“Oh, come on. You can’t really believe he’d come to Riverdale. He’s too comfortable lording it over everyone in Toronto.” Andreas shrugged. “It is unlikely, but a sobering thought. With Sebastian, anything is possible.” He frowned, obviously thinking about the brutal vampire leader. “He has grown more aggressive, erratic, perhaps less sane, as sometimes happens with the elder ones. Our defeat of his minions will only fuel his rage and make him more determined.”

“Minions? What kind of word is that?” Ari demanded. “You really should update your vocabulary. Being born in seventeen hundred and something is no excuse for using words no one understands.” She was just being bitchy. In truth, she wouldn’t change a thing about Andreas’s speech or sexy voice. The archaic words, the faint accent of Italian aristocracy, and the shivers of sensation it produced were all part of him. She never got used to the seductive effect…even when she wanted to be annoyed.

Immortality ends with a few drops of blood…

Seventeen-year-old Justin’s anemic blood is a blessing. Or a curse. It all depends on who you ask.

In the Post-Collapse world where the immortal Vie lord over the rapidly diminishing humans, Anemies like Justin and his sister are rabidly sought after. Their blood is a drug—and a scourge. Justin’s blood causes the Vie to age—a priceless hope for the Earth’s downtrodden humans.

When Justin’s sister is kidnapped by the Vie, he strikes a deal with the human resistance, but they’re nothing more than a cult with delusions that a messianic Anemie will free them all. They believe that person is Justin. Justin thinks they’ll need someone a lot stronger than an anemic kid who can’t run twenty feet without getting dizzy. Between saving what’s left of humanity and saving his sister, Justin can’t decide which will get him killed first.

Indie Life Equals Freedom

IndieLife7-1

What is Indie Life?
How: Sign up on the Linky (link below)
When: Post on the second Wednesday of the month (starting 1/9/2013)
What: Write anything indie related: something that will inspire or help a fellow indie; something that celebrates a release or a milestone; something that talks about the ups and downs, joys and heartaches of Being Indie.
Grab: The banner above to include in your posts!

Because being Indie doesn’t have to mean going it alone.
Is it the second Wednesday of the month already???
One of the most liberating things about being Indie is the flexibility. Want to publish a full length stand alone novel? Go for it! What about a serial, with new “episodes” being released every couple of weeks? Go for it! How about taking turns writing in different genres? Middle grade, young adult, new adult, adult–bam, bam, bam: Do it!
The thing about being Indie is that authors are not pigeon holed into typecast roles. Indie authors create their own persona, branch out in whatever area interests them, and they break the mold.

Title: ENDURE (Book One of the Endure Series)

Author: Laura Diamond

Publication Date: July 12, 2013

Genre: YA dystopian

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Justin’s anemic blood is a blessing. Or a curse. It all depends on who you ask.

To most of the immortal Vie, his blood is a scourge: untouchable and useless. To some Vie, his blood is a drug. To Justin, it’s something that gets him in a lot of trouble. Being poisoned by a Vie is just one example. His sister getting kidnapped is another. Whether it’s being coerced by a deluded cult leader, or negotiating with Alex—an Vie scientist addicted to Anemie blood—Justin struggles to keep every mutated drop of blood he’s got.

His fight for survival gets more complicated when he meets Alex’s slave, Cara. Despite coming from different worlds, they’re both prisoners, at risk of being drained by a hungry Vie any moment. When she risks her own neck to help Justin find his sister, he’s left with a terrifying choice.

Saving what’s left of humanity.

Saving his sister.

Saving the girl he loves.

Or sticking a stake in Alex’s chest.

Justin can’t decide which option will get him killed first.
