Flake-out Friday–Plotting How Character Relationships Change Over Time

Brought to you by LOL Cats!

So, whether you’re a plotter or a panster, you’ve got to have some relationship development between characters, right?

Here’s the basics/must haves in any novel (um, in emoticon form for simplicity):

Funny Pictures - Happy Kitten

And then, the grand finale, when there’s just no emoticons left and the relationship has reached it’s last leg (AKA the climax of the novel, in some cases)…

Funny Pictures - Bow Tie Cat

Well, okay, if we’re talking horror maybe. 😉

Like any good story, there’s a sequel, right?

funny pictures - The Spiritual Healer

What elements are crucial in your characters’ relationships? Discuss.

Brilliant Laura! I love the second one best. What about a cat laughing and swiping its paw, not believing what he’s just heard from his mate. There are so many different facets to even one relationship, it’s hard to narrow it down. Love the pics! Have a great weekend.

  2. Misha says:

Hehehehehe I like plenty of conflict, so I guess my emoticons would run in the opposite direction. 😉

  3. Hahahah….this is hilarious!! I’m thinking spy hunting down the coveted treasure, mysterious love interest, and donuts. Why donuts?? Mwhaaaaaaaa………

  4. This… This is awesome! And not just because it’s funny, but because it’s true! Boy meets girl, boy flirts with girl for a while with varying levels of success, boy gets girl, boy and girl coast for a while before having a major falling-out, boy loses girl, boy either goes mental and slaughters everybody or moves on to someone else.

I like it! Thanks for sharing and being so hilarious about it!

    Hehe great pics!

LOL is right! Of course these cats could plot out a good story. I think there needs to be a cat zombie book out there starring these fellows.

Well, there has to be the moment where they recognize their feelings, even if it’s just to themselves. And then everything has to build from there to when they acknowledge/admit those feelings. Then we can build to the getting together of said couple. (Which you’ll admit has a bit of interesting tension thrown into the mix in my book.)

Oh my word. These pictures are great! LOL!! Nice post. Loved it.

  9. Linda Gray says:

I laughed out loud at LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!! What elements are crucial for my characters’ relationship? trust! Trust!! TRUST!!! Natch. (and oh, yeah, they DO both have to live, which isn’t so easy for one of them)

  10. Sarah says:

That last one is hilarious. Nice levity for a Friday! I think my tendency is to have my characters get along too well. I’m actually working on incorporating more misunderstanding and strife.

  11. I like the last one best, too, but they are all good. It’s always funny when a cat opens his mouth all the way and his face disappears. Cats don’t like us to sleep. We are slacking off on our commitment to serve them vigorously.

Character relationships? They must meet or already know one another, and there must be at least SOME conflict, some issue that involves interaction, some reason for the reader to like or dislike the characters and their behaviors, and a reason for the reader to want to know more.

I’m speaking as a reader. I’m not doing very well as a writer right now. 🙂

  12. Kendall Grey says:

I think conflict and tension are the most important parts of any fictional relationship. Obviously, in real life we don’t want all that mess! Hahahaha!

  13. Too funny Laura…

    I loved the last pic!

Have a great weekend and thanks for the laugh!

  14. Kari Marie says:

That middle picture is hilarous. O.K. they all were. Brilliant post (and educational too).

  15. Tee-hee! Glad this tickled everyone. Makes me grin. 🙂

  16. Love the last one. Live live live. 😀

Thanks for sharing these hilarious yet true pics. My Monday morning suddenly got brighter!
