Mental Health Monday–Put a little salt in the stew

Lydia of Medical Mondays fame posed the following question:

What’s the history of Lithium?

Lithium–a naturally occurring metallic salt and the third element on the periodic table–was “discovered” in 1817. Doctors used it to treat gout and found it also had mood stabilizing properties. In 1949, Australian psychiatrist John Cade published the first scientific article describing the use of lithium in treating acute mania (the elevated mood side of Bipolar disorder). The FDA approved the use of lithium in 1970.

Interestingly, there are natural springs containing trace amounts of lithium. It is purported that people who drink from these waters have a better state of mind and a more positive outlook. These springs have been in existence for a looooooooong time, but resourceful humans have been making a profit off of them since the late 1800’s.

LMAO. I love the “fake” awards it gives itself. Look on the Health Elixir page, on the left hand side. There are two icons that looks like awards, read close they are nothing really.

This bottled water probably comes from a plant in Jersey. LOL. I am a conspiracy theorist when it comes to bottled water. I think it all comes from NJ or NY.

BTW, the best water I have ever had was NYC tap water. I am a Philly girl and our water is pretty good but theirs rocks.

Food Network even did a spotlight on it, how NYC Pizza is the best partly because of NYC Water.

    Great Post.

  3. Love how you’re always dropping in really interesting bits of info. Thanks! Your posts are awesome 😀

I’ve heard of Lithium – prescribed for Bi-polar. However this is the first I’ve heard of the Lithium springs. Thanks for the interesting tidbit. (Hugs)Indigo

@ charli mac – that NYC water comes from the Ashokan Reservoir in upstate NY (i grew up there) so yeah, NYC water would rock! 🙂

  6. I think I need a big jug of that water. My mental state has been weakening by the minute. 🙂

I’m always amazed at how something so small that we can’t even see it–like the Lithium in the spring water–can have such a huge impact on the human body and mind.

That said, I could definitely use some of that water!
