The connection to the Indie Life is that this seems to be a fairly common occurrence. Indie authors have lots of projects going and often times they are faced with novel hopping. No pressure!

I’ve been hearing about BREAKING GLASS for several months now and CAN’T WAIT to finally get my hands on it. JULY IS TOO FAR AWAY, LOL!

Below you’ll find cover art, blurb, info about Lisa Amowitz, a link to a Rafflecopter giveaway, AND a FREE download of SHARDS, an illustrated preview of BREAKING GLASS–how cool is that???

First, though, I’d like to share how BREAKING GLASS came to be–it’s quite a story; thanks for sharing, Lisa!

On Beginnings:

Beginnings are tough for writers. I will generally do almost anything to avoid them. With my forthcoming book, BREAKING GLASS, I sat on the idea for over two years before I even started to think seriously about writing it.

For every book I start, the process is a little different. BREAKING GLASS began as one of those concepts that I jot down in a notebook or Word file and forget about. Right at this moment, I may have numerous of these orphaned ideas stashed in forgotten files and those little throwaway notebooks I collect then tuck into drawers, purses and handbags, only to be found when I exhume them years later.

When I first came up with the idea for BREAKING GLASS, over four years ago, I’d wanted to call it SPECTACULAR. All I knew was that the MC was a boy with a somewhat snarky sense of humor, that he was recovering from some kind of accident, the girl he was obsessed with had gone missing, and he was ready to try almost anything to get her back, even raise her from the dead.

I don’t really remember the exact moment when I named my main character Jeremy Glass, or when I decided that the town he lived in was a fictitious version of a real town called Croton-on-Hudson which lies forty minutes to the north of New York City. I don’t know how long it was after the conversation I had with a teen boy about a girl he liked all through high school, despite the fact she’d stepped all over his heart repeatedly, that I started to write. I do know that there was a strange and twisted tree growing by the house where I’d spent that summer, and for some reason, my attention fixated on that tree as I listened to the landlady and her daughter have some awful fights. Don’t even ask me why—I will just tell you that the tree is the one where Jeremy finds his first real clue from the missing Susannah. Maybe all of it clumped together to form the beginnings of BREAKING GLASS.

This is the way it works with me. Weird bits of ephemera and experiences get caught in the filter of my mind and get all jumbled together. That mental junkyard or musty attic is the place I go digging when I begin a new book. I never know what I am going to find there.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I hated the title SPECTACULAR. It did not fit the eerie mood I was after. I’d read Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver series and a few by John Green and knew without question that this was the terrain I wanted to tread—where the supernatural meets the strange landscape of the human mind.

I decided I needed to learn about the psychology behind my main character’s intense obsession first. That there had to be a reason for his devoted longing.

I wanted to know this boy. The name Jeremy popped into my head, and his ironic self-deprecating manner along with it. That revelation was quickly followed by the surname Glass, a somewhat generic sounding last name, but one that is faintly Jewish, of which Jeremy is one-half. Maybe that’s where all his worrying comes from! I ought to know!

I went ahead and wrote the first chapter and let my crit group read it. They liked the voice very much and encouraged me to keep going. However, they soon complained that Jeremy was all over the place—there was no clear reason for his angst, his anxiety and his thing with Susannah.

I needed to do more work on his history and what made Jeremy tick, so I called my very good friend, a psychotherapist living in the very town I based Jeremy’s town on. It was strictly coincidence, but it did help to get her attention! I asked my friend Debbie if Jeremy’s issues and the way he kept his behavior secret while maintaining a seemingly spotless reputation was plausible.

I was delighted when the brilliant Debbie came up with a diagnosis for Jeremy:

POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER, she said—give Jeremy a single traumatic event in his past that he has not effectively processed. Everything he goes through, every attempt he makes to avoid the root of his pain stems from this event.

This is why my friend, Debbie Cohen, MSW, is the true hero of BREAKING GLASS.

She diagnosed Jeremy.

Then I began to write in earnest. I made a file in Scrivner and wrote character profiles for all the main characters. I researched Jeremy’s pysch issues, his physical issues, scoured countless medical websites, and endless bits of history trivia that Jeremy would know and I would not. I’m not going to divulge the specific nature of what I researched as that might provides spoilers for the plot.

I do remember that this ground-breaking conversation with Debbie took place in the winter of 2011. By May 2011 I had written and rewritten about ten chapters. Everyone loved it, including my agent at the time. But I was stuck.

The next three people who deserve top billing in the saga of BREAKING GLASS are my good friends, the authors Christine Johnson, Dhonielle Clayton and Kate Milford. Christine and Dhonielle patiently endured countless phone plotting marathons (as did my former agent). By early June, I knew where BREAKING GLASS was going, but I was still spinning my wheels. It was Kate looked me straight in the eye one evening when she, Dhonielle and I met for dinner and said—I challenge you to finish the book by the end of June. That was two weeks. TWO WEEKS. Almost exactly two years ago.

And so I did.

And what took three years to start, was done in two weeks. The first complete draft, anyway.

Author bio:

Lisa Amowitz was born in Queens and raised in the wilds of Long Island, New York where she climbed trees, thought small creatures lived under rocks and studied ant hills. And drew. A lot.

When she hit her teens, she realized that Long Island was too small for her and she needed to escape. So she went to college in Pittsburgh. Go figure.

On leaving college, Lisa became a graphic designer living in New York City. She eventually married her husband of a zillion years, had two lovely children, and was swept away to a fairy tale life in the Bronx, where, unbelievably there are more trees and wilderness than her hometown. She can see the Hudson River from her kitchen window.

Lisa has been a professor of Graphic Design at her beloved Bronx Community College where she has been tormenting and cajoling students for nearly seventeen years. She started writing eight years ago because she wanted something to illustrate, but somehow, instead ended up writing YA. Probably because her mind is too dark and twisted for small children.

BREAKING GLASS which will be released in July, 2013 from Spencer Hill Press, is her first published work. VISION, the first of the Finder series will be released in 2014, along with an unnamed sequel in the following year. LIFE AND BETH will also be released in the near future, along with graphic novel style art.

My dear writerly friend, Cate Peace is sharing the cover of her new release, THIS TIME NEXT YEAR. Below the cover and blurb, you’ll get to peek at an excerpt–WOOT!

I’m SO excited for Cate. Can’t wait to read this one! Glad it’s coming soon, like late June/early July soon. CONGRATS MY FRIEND!!!!!! *throws confetti*

This-Time-Next-Year300

BLURB

Ever since surviving the vampire attack that killed her parents, Moira Curran has dealt with the resulting nightmares and abandonment issues the only way she could—by throwing herself into her education and then her biochemistry career, preferring a life of hermitude in her lab.

Kiernan Shaw has never forgotten the night twenty years ago when his maker killed a six-year-old girl’s parents in front of her. He’s spent the better part of the last two decades searching for her in order to make amends.

Madame Eve has managed to bring the two together. When they finally meet, will Moira be able to give Kiernan what he needs? Will Kiernan put her fears to rest? Or will old fears and guilt keep them apart?

EXCERPT

For a moment, he thought back to Madame Eve’s email. If she trusts you, she will tell you her name. He understood the power of names, and so did Madame Eve. Something insignificant to a mortal meant everything to a vampire, in whose world names were both salvation and control. Remind a vampire of his humanity, or steal it away by forcing him to do something horrific, like watching a little girl’s parents be eviscerated right in front of her.

“Kiernan Shaw.” Swallowing hard, he found his way back onto the coffee table. “And yours?”

Would she tell him her name? Would she allow him that kind of power?

She took a deep breath, as though considering the same questions. “Moira Curran.”

He rolled the name on his tongue and loved the way it felt. “Beautiful.” He reached to stroke her cheek, but she flinched. “Moira, I won’t hurt you. I could never hurt you.”

“I’m sorry,” she muttered. “Old habits, I guess.”

He nodded, unable to speak at first. The cloying scent of her fear, like overripe peaches, almost strangled him. “Why did you ask me to stay?”

“I don’t know.”

Neither did he, but he wouldn’t leave until she asked him to.

“I don’t want to be alone, Kiernan. Isn’t that pathetic?”

He warmed at the sound of his name on her lips. His mouth watered at the thought of kissing her, exploring her, making his name come out of that gorgeous mouth again and again. He tamped down his desire. Nothing good would happen if he moved too fast. “Not in the slightest.” Willem had all but guaranteed him a life alone. Like he approached a scared animal, he moved next to her on the couch. She uncoiled, but didn’t relax. “Talk, Moira. Please.” The silence hurt his ears as much as any scream.

She shook her head. “It’s too hard.” Tears spilled but she didn’t move to wipe them away.

Time to be bold, I guess. He brushed a hand against her cheek again. Instead of flinching, she eased into his touch. “I want to ease your hurt,” he said. “Will you let me?”

Since it’s a federal US holiday, I’m reprising a previous Mental Health Monday post. I think it’s apropos because today is Memorial Day–a day of remembering those men and women who died while serving in the military. New research is being conducted identifying how pervasive PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is in soldiers. Below, I’ve highlighted details of the illness and some examples of what it looks like.

Please note, this post is solely for the purposes of writing, and is NOT intended for medical advice or treatment.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is classified as an anxiety disorder (see NOTE below, commenting on DSM 5). Technically, the person must have a constellation of symptoms for at least 30 days to qualify for the diagnosis. Some people recover, some go on to have a chronic course, lasting months to years. Symptoms can recur several years later as well, with a period of remission between.

An event must be perceived as life threatening or potentially life threateningto qualify as traumatic. Immediately, that lends a LOT of subjectivity. What’s life threatening to me may be different for  you. That being said, I’m sure we can all pretty much agree on the biggies–combat, rape, assault, natural disasters, terrorism, abuse (sexual, neglect, physical, emotional, verbal, whether as an adult or child).

The traumatic event can either be one “biggie,” or it can be the accumulation of “smaller” events over a prolonged period of time (such as child abuse or domestic violence).

Classic symptoms include:

Hypervigilence: The person doesn’t trust others. They may feel uncomfortable in exposed places (malls, crowded places, being around strangers). They will frequently make sure their back is to a wall (so it’s not exposed). They’ll keep an eye on the exits and make sure they can get to one fast if needed. They’ll also show a “startle” response, where they jump at a loud, sudden sound. Some people jump when the phone rings, for example.

Avoidance: This is pretty much self explanatory. The person will avoid triggers and things associated with the trauma. This can include movies, locations, people, even certain subjects of discussion for fear it will lead to symptoms. This, by the way, makes PTSD difficult to treat in some instances, because the very thing bringing a person to treatment, is the thing they want to avoid discussing.

What’s important to know is the brain remembers details about a traumatic event that the sufferer may not consciously recall. Furthermore, an otherwise innocuous stimuli may be paired with the event and become “dangerous.” If, for example, a person’s attacker wore a blue jacket, then the person may experience an anxiety response when confronted with a blue article of clothing. The jacket itself is benign, but the brain “remembers” it as a threat via association.

Another example would be a soldier in Iraq who has returned home and every time he goes under an overpass, he searches for IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) tucked under the framework.

Which leads me to my next point. For a soldier in Iraq, being hypervigilent is conducive to survival. It makes her good at her job. BUT, when she returned to civilian life, her sensitive attunement to stimuli in the environment does not return to baseline. That is NOT conducive to living in a non-war zone.

That’s what PTSD is. A state of “hyper arousal” that is above baseline. It’s like drinking 16 cups of coffee and maintaining that level of tension and awareness ALL THE TIME.

Other cardinal symptoms of PTSD include: Flashbacks and nightmares: If someone is presented with a “trigger” (like a blue jacket), they may experience a flashback. Flashbacks can be mild (where the person is able to recognize it as a flashback and they can control it) or they can be severe, where the person actually feels like they’re reliving the event in real time.

Final tidbit: The person who suffers from PTSD is at higher risk of misusing drugs and overusing alcohol. Substance abuse and dependence as a co-morbid diagnosis is therefore common and an important aspect to address.

NOTE: ***Once the DSM 5 comes out, PTSD will be in its own category. I look forward to seeing how this new classification system works and how it encapsulates a very serious and life-altering illness.***

Congrats, Heather!!!

 When Its Least Expected Tour

Moving on after a tragedy can be impossible – especially when you’ve been dealing with those tragedies for over two years. But it’s her senior year, and Harley Anderson is more than ready to do just that, even though the skeletons in her closet can’t exactly be hidden.

Enter Mason Daniel, the egotistical, sexy, surfer boy from California – a boy with his own hidden demons, and even bigger secret agenda.

Mason isn’t right for Harley. He knows this better than anyone. He’s the epitome of a runner–a guy who takes what he can get, only to split a short while later. But he can’t deny the emotions that Harley brings out of him, so he’s going to break his rules for once.

He should have known what it would lead to… Two kindred souls – both lost and then found. Will they fail, once again, in their search for contentment and happiness, or will they finally find true love, when it’s least expected?

An excerpt:

Mason’s heart raced, his hands trembled. His mouth went dry. Finally, she turned around, and shit … there was no way he could tear his eyes away at that point.

Damn, when had he turned into a creeper?

Her profile appeared first as she dug her slender hand into some wallet thingy. And then boom, she finally glanced up at him.

He gaped, and then he blinked. Holy … shit … the girl … was a goddess.

His body numbed, his eyes bugged from his head. The breath in his chest was lost in that stunned sort of way, just as the sexy as sin creature, with the chocolate brown eyes, glared back at him. Mason blinked again, this time his jaw practically became unhinged. He knew he should look away, or maybe at least wipe the drool hanging from his mouth, but he was too frozen in place to a damn thing.

“What the hell are you staring at?” she snarled. Her upper lip curled on one side, Elvis style.

Damn… Who knew grimaces could be so sexy? She owned that grimace – worked it like it was her sex slave. Like a love sick puppy, Mason found himself grinning back at her, only to get assaulted with more nasty words from that pretty full-lipped mouth.

“Umm, are you going to answer me sometime tonight, pal, or are you just going to stand there, grinning like the idiot you most likely are?” She finished wiping off her hands with some sort of napkin before she moved in closer, stalking him with fierceness in her hateful eyes.

The site of her body coming near should have had Mason running, but he didn’t. Couldn’t was the better word. He needed to be near her. Hell, he needed to touch her… He tucked his hands back in his pockets to keep from doing just that. He had to get control before he did something stupid.

“I couldn’t help but notice your little problem, so I thought I’d be your knight in shining armor tonight…” he winked. God, where did all his game go? He wanted to smack his own face, but he was too distracted by the sudden appearance of her barely there freckles across her cream colored skin. In fact, the closer she got to him, the harder he tightened his fists to fight off the freakish urge to reach out and play connect the dots with them.

He shook his head, clearing his pussy thoughts, taking a breath to steady his voice at the same time. He wiped a damp palm down the front of his face. There was no way some little Midwestern girl, with hair that resembled midnight ocean waves, was going to get to him.

“Wow, I’ve got my own very own hero here, Abs. Why ever didn’t you tell me?” She tried her hand at an Alabama drawl, fanning her face at the same time. Her attitude should have turned him off, but damn if it didn’t draw him in more.

“Hey now, no need to get an attitude with me, little beast,” he replied, digging the lost key chain from his pocket. Her eyes narrowed down at his hands, reaching out to swipe it from him. He grinned, holding it above his head. No way was he letting it go that easily.

It was play time.

Bidding Wars

Love Strikes, Book 1

By Lacey Wolfe

A sheriff plus a nurse plus a house equals trouble…

Nurse Molly Harper has had a tough year. But when she decides to regain control of her life, buying her dream house becomes her first priority. Finding the perfect house and falling in love with it—that’s the easy part. The hard part is getting rid of the obnoxious man who thinks he’s going to be the new owner. Even if he is gorgeous. And the sheriff…

Sheriff Luke Logan needs to buy a house. Getting out of the renting game will help in the custody battle for his son, so when the perfect place pops up right on his street, he can’t believe his luck. But there’s already an offer on the table, and the woman won’t back down. Too bad she doesn’t know that he always goes after what he wants, and he has no intention of letting her have “his” house. Even if she does make him feel that he might need more than just a house to make a home…

Excerpt

“That’s the only reason?” She wasn’t sure why she was disappointed.

“What were you hoping I would say?” His gaze locked on hers and held it.

There was no way she was going to ask if it had to do with her and the hope that they could have more. But as he stared at her with lust-filled eyes, she knew she had to say something. “I guess I just thought…from the stuff you said yesterday that maybe it was…never mind.”

Luke moved closer to her. Molly’s breath caught, and the sound of her racing heart filled her head. She did her best not to look at him, but her need to see his eyes was too strong. She gazed up and found he was staring at her with nothing but passion in his eyes.

She inhaled a spicy fragrance that tingled her senses. He reached out and rubbed his hand along her cheek. She closed her eyes out of instinct. Just the feel of him touching her brought back feelings she hadn’t experienced in a long time. The nerves in her body stood on end, and it was almost as though she were being tickled. She shouldn’t be enjoying this. In fact, she should tell him to stop again and not come any closer, but, man, did it feel good, for once, to just feel.

And feel she did. He was close enough now that she felt his warm breath touch her skin. Opening her eyes, she saw his focus was on her lips—his

mouth inches away. If she made the slightest movement, she’d taste him.

She ached to grip his shirt and pull him to her. If they kissed, it would be passionate and ignite a fire deep within her. She hadn’t kissed another man since Steven. Could Luke be the first?

She pushed up on her tiptoes. She was going to do it. Reaching out, she was about to wrap her hand around his neck. Her gaze was locked on his, and it was as though they were moving in slow motion.

“Sheriff, you in there?” A man pounded on the door, sending it flying open.

It’s the second Wednesday of the month–HOW DID IT GET TO BE MAY???–and it’s time for another Indie Life post.

Banding together and helping one another is a big part of the Indie Life and today I’d like to share a collaborative effort among a talented bunch of authors–an anthology titled: INDIESTRUCTIBLE. It’s a collection of essays highlighting the inspiring path of Indie publishing, spearheaded by none other than Jessica Bell.

It’s an anthology I’m compiling and editing called,INDIESTRUCTIBLE: INSPIRING STORIES FROM THE PUBLISHING JUNGLE, which will launch September 16, 2013. It will be sold as an eBook for 99c for the first six months. During that time I will donate 100% of the profits to BuildOn. After that, it will be free forever.

This is the best of the indie tradition of experienced authors paying forward what they’ve learned, giving you information to help you on your journey. The personal essays in this book will leave you itching to get your work into the hands of readers and experience, first-hand, all the rewards indie publishing has to offer.

I’m so excited to take part in Heather Van Fleet’s cover reveal for her upcoming novel, Resisting Fate. Ain’t it striking? Congrats, Heather!!!

Seventeen-year-old Emmy O’Connell is the epitome of a hot mess.

Her boyfriend’s been shipped out of town to some boarding school four states away. Her step douche is constantly drunk and badgering her. And then there’s her good-ole-mom… The lady is nothing more than a miserable shell of a woman. She’s turned off all of her feelings and her ability to be a good mother as well, leaving poor Emmy and her four year old brother Jamie to suffer. Life couldn’t get much worse, right?

Enter the elusive, cocky, and oh-so-broody Jack Hartman…

The jerk cousin of her boyfriend becomes Emmy’s worst nightmare…times ten. He’s cruel. He’s insensitive. But he also has this strange little ability over her – he makes her weak in the knees with the single touch of his hand. But no matter how miserable or amazing Jack makes her feel, Emmy can’t seem to deny him, especially when he takes on the role of her protector –her pseudo-knight in a black leather coat. A knight who also just so happens to ride in on his black Harley, instead of a white horse…

And to make a bad situation worse…

Werewolves and teens shouldn’t mix! But what can Emmy do when she finds herself thrown head first into the center of it all? Can she handle the supernatural mess her life rapidly becomes or will she fight against the inevitable fate her heart desires?
